These tubes were widely used in variable transformer (autotransformers) devices to control/adjust the AC voltage level. (In Soviet time, in some areas, voltage level was not stable during the day, especially in the evening when everyone switched on their valve tubes TVs consuming as far as 600-700 VA.)
