The original use of this tube was in early facsimile (fax) machines that used photographic paper. It was also claimed to be useful for oscillograph timing markers, photo wire transmitters, stroboscopes, photo-electric counters, photo engraving and seismograph recorders. It was sometimes used as the transmitting source for light-beam audio communications in a school science fair.
