The 2A is an early potassium hydride photocell introduced in 1925. It was used for the reproduction of variable density optical sound tracks.

In manufacture, purified potassium vapor is deposited on the glass, a small amount of hydrogen gas is introduced, and a small flame is used to clear the window.
