See US patent 1,706,135 “Electronic device” filed in October 7, 1925 by Lewis S. Baker.

According to the patent, such a rectifier connected with a 120 V alternating current source delivers 40 mA of direct current at a pressure of 90 V for more than 3,000 hours of operation.
