Prior to World War II, Émile Varay was the representative in France for the German manufacturer of X-ray tubes C.H.F. Müller (now Philips Medical Systems). After the war, he established his own company, using the trade name Tubix, to manufacture tubes that were based on the Müller designs.

The anode is covered by the black-painted heat sink that is air cooled.
