Donle Type A Gas Triode DetectorExternal grid vacuum tube. 1919. Designer was Dr. H.P. Donle, then Chief engineer at Connecticut Telephone and Electric Company, Meriden, Connecticut, USA. In 1925 Dr. Donle left Connecticut and Electric Company to establish his own company, the Donle Bristol Corporation of Meriden, Connecticut, where later Sodion types were developed and manufactured. The Type A was the first attempt to working around the Fleming or de Forest patents. This Type A is fitted with a Shaw UV base. Earlier versions had an outer glass envelope to aid in temperature stabilization of the internal assembly. In developing this tube, Donle experimented with various metals as a successful external anode. He eventually settled on a thin silver tube which was placed over the inner glass tube. • US Patent 1,291,441 : Electron Valve.
