This lamp was intended for indoor use. It had two holes in which an insecticide tablet could be placed, and could therefore work in any position. The heat released by the filament of the bulb was sufficient to evaporate the contents of the tablet.
The pellets contained lindane (γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane), which is toxic to bugs, but also to humans. Based primarily on evidence from animal studies, most evaluations of lindane have concluded that it may possibly cause cancer. In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified lindane as a known human carcinogen, and its production and agricultural use is now banned in the 182 countries that are Parties to the Stockholm Convention.
