The ML-8495 was designed for use as a switch tube in pulse modulators for radar and in other high-voltage switching applications. It can deliver pulse power output in the order of 2 to 3 MW. The tube is designed for operation immersed in oil (required for utilization of the maximum plate voltage rating of 160 kV).

At operating conditions, the high accelerating potential in a tube like this drives electrons hard into the anode, delivering substantial amounts of X-Rays and over time that turns glass brown.
