Used in the AN/DPN-19, a historic, miniaturized S-band radar transponder beacon developed by the United
States military in the mid-1950s. Its primary purpose was to enhance tracking ranges for high-altitude research rockets and
early ballistic test vehicles. The AN/DPN-19 was a key payload component in several foundational mid-century aerospace programs,
among which the Lockheed X-17. It was
built into the nose cone of the Lockheed X-17, a three-stage solid-fuel research rocket used to study high-speed atmospheric
reentry effects. It allowed ground crews to track the vehicle at speeds up to Mach 14.5.
