A part of the tube is internally coated with some electrically conductive material (possibly stannic oxide or tin-doped indium oxide), which is connected to the outside with a small ball connector.

The tube contains a sliding glass cylinder to which a metal disc is attached, so it can be moved towards or away from what appears to be a cathode.
