Sylvania C100S Zirconium Concentrated-Arc Lamp
Lampe à arc concentré au zirconium
Zirkonium Bogenlampe

The cathode of this lamp is made of a hollow refractory metal containing zirconium oxide, an electrically conductive ceramic. The anode is a metal plate with an aperture residing directly above the cathode with the normal to the aperture coincident with the longitudinal axis of the cathode. Argon gas fills the tube. The arc discharge causes the zirconium to heat (to about 3000°K) and produces an intense, very small source of light.

Operation of these lamps required a special circuit to provide a high starting voltage and another well-filtered and ballasted circuit for operation.

The color temperature is about 5000K.

These lamps were used in microscopy and in photographic enlargers, making possible increased detail rendition and depth of focus. However, they were soon superseded by mercury arc lamps.
