The filament is a straight wire held taut between right-angle shaped platinum lead-in wires at each end of the lamp. Small cone shaped brass contacts are cemented to the glass which form the electrical contacts.
US Patent No. 768,479 (1904) was issued to Dennis Joseph O'Brien of San Francisco, California and assigned to the O'Brien Reflector and Electric Tube Lamp Company.
The Canadian Patent No. 148,896 filed in 1911 by D. J. O'Brien and Robert Martin Catts presents a closer version of the present lamp.
O'Brien has also filed patents for reflectors specifically designed to make the most of these straight filament lamps, for example US Patent No. 974,090 “Lamp and Reflector therefor”. These reflectors were recommended for illuminating roll top and flat top desks, pianos, typewriter desks, library tables and for general office and home use.
