Strictly horizontal operation ±4° to prevent separation of the gas phases along the tube.

The use of an additional glass bulb made the halogen lamp easier to install and safer to operate.
Moreover, when the filling was changed from iodine to bromine compounds in the early 1970s, jacketed burners could be operated at a higher temperature (= higher efficacy) without the risk of losing hydrogen via diffusion through quartz (to this end the outer jacket is filled with a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture, to ensure that hydrogen diffuses back into the inner burner as quickly as it escapes).

Note the black layer of graphite painted over the pinch-seals of the burner.
This serves to raise their temperature and further slow the rate of bromine attack on the colder filament regions.
