The Graphechon storage tube was developed in 1947 at the Princeton Laboratories
of the Radio Corporation of America.
The necessity for such a tube arose in the course of development of the Teleran system of air navigation
for aircraft guidance and air traffic control: the need for PPI (Plan Position Indication) to television
scan conversion and for picture storage became evident.
The Graphechon also allows information from several radar and TV systems to be mixed and presented as a
composite display.
Storage time may be adjusted from several seconds to more than a minute.
The tube as a writing gun at one end of the tube, a reading gun at the other end, and a target between them.
Both guns have electrostatic focus and utilize magnetic deflection.
