This frame-transfer CCD has a two-part sensor, in which half of the array is masked from incoming light and functions as a buffer storage region. Signals from the light-sensitive region are transferred to the storage region first, instead of being transferred directly to the CCD outputs. This arrangement allows for faster frame rates and other performance improvements as compared to full frame CCDs.
