Tung-Sol 708A SHF Receiving Triode
“Flying saucer tube”.
Introduced by Western Electric in 1941. Prototypes were D-160127 and D-160206.
Classified as secret during the war.
Silver-plated steel case with a glass evacuation tip on the top.
The case is the grid terminal; the filament is brought out through two pins, each forming a coaxial line. The plate is brought out in the same manner.
Radiation-cooled triode used as a converter or RF amplifier at centimeter wavelenghts, and as a mixer in the Navy ASC and ASC-1 aircraft radars to develop a 60-MHz IF. Also used in the 1942 SE shipboard system.
There was apparently an oscillmor version of the 708A numbered D-160573 and 1301M.
