Like the other neon tubes in the ZA100x series, the ZA1000 has a special electrode structure in order to prevent complete covering of the inside of the bulb with metal that would make the glow invisible. The tube consists of a central molybdenum cathode rod, surrounded by a meshed cylinder anode.

The statistical breakdown of the tube is reduced to less than 1 msec for a 10-20V overvoltage by the inclusion of a small quantity of tritium.
